dtv2ser-setup.txt Hardware Setup -------------- 1.) build the dtv2ser or the dtv2usb hardware (see hardware/dtv2usb-manual.txt if you own a dtv2ser+usb device) 2a.) connect your device to the PC and flash the bootloader onto the ATmega8 with an ISP: > cd server > make prog_bootloader 2b.) flash the correct fuse bits on a new device: > make prog_fuse 2c.) set the bootloader jumper on the device and power it. now the yellow transfer LED should be lit. 2d.) flash the server firmware onto the ATmega8 via the bootloader > cd server > make help > make prog_dist FILE=flash/dtv2ser-0.1-115200-cvm8board-atmega8.hex make sure to choose the correct baud rate for later operation (here 115.2 kbps)! repeat steps 2c.) and 2d.) to update your firmware. 2e.) detach device and unset the bootloader jumper 3.) modify your DTV to supply power and reset on your DB9 joystick connector: PIN 1 D0 PIN 2 D1 PIN 3 D2 PIN 4 CLK PIN 5 N/C PIN 6 ACK PIN 7 +5V <-------- add this (only for 0.1 MAX based HW) PIN 8 GND PIN 9 DTV Reset <----- and this 4.) attach the dtv2ser via the DB9 joystick connector to the DTV and power on. if the green LED goes on then it looks good! 5.) attach your client Mac/PC via RS232 to the dtv2ser device or attach the dtv2usb directly via USB. launch your favorite terminal application (e.g. Z-Term or Hyperterm) set the connection values to: 115200 baud, 8 data bit, 1 stop bit, parity none and RTS/CTS hardware hand shaking. enter a 'v' and press return the dtv2ser/usb should answer with a version string close the terminal application Software Setup -------------- 1.) install Python on your system (http://www.python.org) and the PySerial module (http://pyserial.sourceforge.net/) 2.) enter the 'client' directory and call './dtv2sertrans' (Mac/Linux) or 'python dtv2sertrans' (Windows) dtv2sertrans will connect to the dtv2ser server and return its firmware version. if the connection to the dtv2ser server fails then set the environment variables: DTV2SER_PORT serial port device (e.g. /dev/ttyUSB0 on Linux) DTV2SER_SPEED your baud rate (e.g. 115200) or use the -p and -s switches of dtv2sertrans. 3.) run the testsuite: > dtv2sertrans diag testsuite this will perform a number of test transfers and tests all functionality of the dtv2ser device. if the device passes all tests then you are ready to go!
